Dubai: Medna Spirit, led by John Velazquez and coached by twice-crowned Triple Crown winner Bob Buffett, overtook Mandalone by half to capture the 147th Kentucky Derby in front of a limited crowd at the sun-drenched Churchill Downs on Saturday.
Buffett, who won the 2020 Derby with Authentic, beat Ben Jones with the most wins in the Derby by a coach with seven wins. (Jones won six times between 1938 and 1952.)
“I am the luckiest man in the world,” Buffett said on NBC. “I’m so spoiled when you bring these hard-wearing horses here, and this little horse has a big heart.”
Velasquez, who rode Authentic last year, rode the sanctuaries of the Kentucky Oaks title winner on Friday. This was his fourth derby win.
Hot Rod Charlie took the third place. Godolphin ‘favorite Core Quality site, previously unbeaten in five matches, took fourth place.
The race, which regularly brings a crowd of more than 150,000 people to Churchill Downs but was run without spectators in 2020 and with a limited number of fans in 2021 due to the Coronavirus pandemic, 51,838 attendees were announced.
