A cluster of star sapphires worth up to $ 100 million was discovered in the backyard of a Sri Lankan man by workers digging a well.

The pale blue stone was found in the garden of the gem dealer Mr. Gamage in Ratnapura in southern Sri Lanka.

It weighs 510 kg, for a total of 2.5 million carats, and has been named “Sapphire Serendipity”. BBC reported.

Mr. Gamage, who identified himself only for safety reasons, said he “stumbled upon this huge specimen” after workers told him they had found several rare stones.

The find turned out to be a sapphire cluster, a group of stones tied together by mud or clay.

It took the authorities over a year to certify the gem after months of cleaning the stone of dirt and other impurities.

During cleaning, several high quality star sapphires fell out of the cluster. How many precious stones in the cluster are of high quality, experts have not yet determined.

Blue star sapphires are known for having an asterisk in the center due to a phenomenon of light reflection called asterism.

The Ratnapura region is known for producing high quality gemstones and several other valuable stones have been discovered in the area.

The country’s jewelry industry, a world leader, has been hit by the Covid-19 pandemic, but experts hope the newly found stone will bring a much needed boost.

“Given the size and cost, we think it will be of interest to private collectors or museums,” said Tilak Weerasinghe, chairman of the Sri Lanka National Gem and Jewelry Authority.

He added that the cluster is “probably the largest in the world.”

Prince William’s fiancee Kate Middleton wore a blue oval sapphire and a Sri Lankan diamond band.

Sri Lanka exported $ 500 million worth of gemstones and jewelry in 2020, according to government figures.

It is famous for its precious stones, especially sapphires, which come in shades of blue, pink, yellow, purple, white, green and orange.
