KUALA LUMPUR: Medical data on vaccine use have shown Sinovac and Pfizer vaccines are equally effective against Covid-19, said Tang Sri Health Director General Dr. Noor Hisham Abdullah (pix).
In his Facebook post today, Noor Hisham said that on July 7, the New England Journal of Medicine published a report on Sinovac’s experience in Chile from February to May 2021 of 4.2 million fully vaccinated, compared with 5.5 million unvaccinated residents. also documented 218,784 cases of Covid-19.
“Sinovac has been found to reduce Covid-19 infection by 65.9%, reduce hospital admissions by 87.5%, reduce intensive care unit (ICU) visits by 90.3% and reduce mortality by 86.3%.” , – he said.
Dr. Noor Hisham, by contrast, said the Pfizer study, which reported 95% efficacy, was very small and analyzed only 170 cases of Covid-19 involving a group of eight vaccinated and 162 unvaccinated individuals.
Therefore, he said that in practice, there is not much difference between Sinovac and Pfizer vaccines.
“Both drugs are very effective in preventing serious illness and hospitalization, but less effective against mild or asymptomatic Covid-19,” he added. – Burnama
