During a media interview on Friday, Biden directly criticized Facebook.
When asked about the post for social media platforms like Facebook, Biden replied, “They are killing people … the only pandemic we have is among the unvaccinated, and they are killing people.”
Facebook has defended its policy of fighting vaccine disinformation.
“We will not be distracted by accusations that are not supported by facts,” a Facebook spokesman told The Verge.
“The fact is, more than 2 billion people have viewed authoritative information about COVID-19 and vaccines on Facebook, more than anywhere else on the Internet. More than 3.3 million Americans have also used our Vaccine Finder to find out where and how to get a vaccine, ”added a company spokesman.
Earlier this week, a report by US Surgeon General Vivek Murthy called for social media platforms to tame accounts that spread misinformation.
“They’ve developed product features like Like buttons that reward us for sharing emotionally charged content, not accurate content. And their algorithms, as a rule, give us more of what we push, drawing deeper and deeper disinformation, “he told reporters.
In May, the social network announced it was blocking all posts from users who repeatedly share misinformation and fake content on its platforms as it expands its fact-checking programs to individuals from pages, groups, Instagram accounts and domains.
The social network reported that the new rule applies to false or misleading content about Covid-19 and vaccines, climate change, elections, or other topics so that fewer people see misinformation in its family apps.
