‘Shooter Dadi’ Chandro Tomar dies from COVID-19


Chandro Tomar, an octogenic shooter who became the oldest woman in the world after practicing the sport in her 60s, has died after fighting with COVID-19.

She was 89 years old and had been receiving treatment in a hospital in Meerut since April 26.

“Mira Sath Chot Jaya, Chandro Kaha Chai Jai (You left me, Chandro where did you go?” Wrote her sister-in-law Prakashi Tomar, who is also one of the oldest female sharp shooters, on her Twitter page.

Tomar, who was nicknamed “The Daddy Shooter” due to her exploits, was taken to hospital after she complained of difficulty breathing. Tests revealed that she had contracted the highly contagious virus that kills more than 3,000 people every day in the country.

Tomar, who comes from a village in Bajpat, Uttar Pradesh, was 60 years old when she first picked up the gun but won several national veterans’ contests, and her exploits ultimately inspired the award-winning Bollywood movie Saand ki Aankh.

Her death was welcomed by well-known people from various walks of life, including Sports Minister Keren Rijo and actor Bhumi Bidnikar, who played her in the biographical film.

“I feel deeply saddened by the tragic demise of my love Daddy Chandro Tomar J. She has been an inspiration to millions and will continue to inspire forever. May her soul rest in peace. Mother of Shanti.”

“She is devastated by the news of the death of Chandro Daddy. I feel as if a part of me is gone. She set her own rules and paved the way for many girls to find their dream. Her legacy will continue in them. My family’s condolences. I am lucky enough to know her and be her,” Bidnikar tweeted.

Indian Aviation Minister Hardeep Singh Puri described her as “an example of gender equality and a champion of women’s rights”.

“The courage with which he defied patriarchy and took archery as a sport that would inspire future generations. Her family’s condolences,” he said.

Olympic athletes – boxer Achilles Kumar, who knew Tomar personally, and Juideep Karmakar’s shooting – also expressed condolences for her death.

The Chair of the Paralympic Committee of India (PCI) Deepa Malik also expressed her concern over the tragic development.

“Your courage, your actions and your life inspire many. I have taught generations to live life on your terms of hard work and passion, we hope we all uphold your legacy. My deepest condolences to the family, relatives and dear ones from“ Shooter Dadi ”Malik said.

Tomar, who is considered a feminist icon, was 15 years old when she got married and shot her over 65 years old.

It all started with a chance visit to a shooting club when her granddaughter expressed her interest in playing sports. Tomar picked up the gun and fired a bullet while at the club and hit the bull’s eye, much to the admiration of the club’s coach.

Tomar participated in several competitions with her sister-in-law, Prakashi, who was also portrayed in the movie based on their lives. The two broke all kinds of stereotypes, including fighting patriarchy.
