Federer toppled by South Africa's Anderson in Wimbledon QF

Hopes for a 10th anniversary rematch of the epic 2008 Wimbledon men’s final between Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal have been dashed, after the Swiss superstar lost his quarter-final match in five sets against South Africa’s Kevin Anderson.

Mr Anderson took four hours and 13 minutes to get past Mr Federer, who is ranked number two in the world and was the tournament’s top seed and defending champion.

It will be the first semi-final appearance at the All England Club for the big-serving South African, who is ranked eighth in the world on the ATP Tour and was seeded eighth for the tournament.

Mr Anderson reached his first final at a major last year when he lost to Rafael Nadal at the US Open. He will play the winner of the quarter-final between John Isner of the US and Milos Raonic of Canada, in what will ensure a big-serving semi-final for that part of the draw.

Novak Djokovic, who edged past Japan’s Kei Nishikori in four sets today, will take on the winner of world number-one Rafael Nadal, who is up 7-5, 6-6 at pixel time against heavy-hitting Argentine Juan Martin Del Potro.

Tennis fans had been salivating at the prospect of Messrs Federer and Nadal meeting in the final, making for a rematch of their 2008 battle that is widely regarded as one of, if not the greatest, match in tennis history. All of the past six majors since the start of 2017 have been won by either of the two players in what has been something of a second act to their storied Grand Slam rivalry.

Mr Federer, who was campaigning for a ninth Wimbledon singles crown and his 21st major, last week signed a 10-year apparel deal worth more than $300m with Japan’s Uniqlo, ending a more than two-decades old partnership with Nike.

Finalists for the women’s singles draw will be decided on Thursday when Angelique Kerber of Germany takes on Latvia’s Jelena Ostapenko and Serena Williams of the US takes on Germany’s Julia Gorges in the semi-finals.
